Who we are

The Co-operative Bank has been doing things differently for over 150 years. Not because we've been told to, but because it's the right thing to do. Since we were formed in 1872, we have worked hard to provide an ethical alternative to our larger competitors. Our unique customer-led ethical policy has been held for over 30 years and is one of the main reasons our customers choose to bank with us. In 2025 The Co-operative Bank returned to mutual ownership following the purchase of the Bank by Coventry Building Society.

We're market leaders in ESG

The Co-operative Bank has once again been rated as the UK's best Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) high street bank*. We're incredibly proud of our rating, maintaining our industry-leading position for a fifth consecutive year. We're making good progress against our commitment to reach Net Zero on our direct emissions by 2030 and are now working to align our long-term 2050 Net Zero goal with Coventry Building Society. Our Environmental and Governance principles

Businesses today are increasingly being held to account by their customers, investors, regulators, employees and other stakeholders. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting makes the overall impact of an organisation's activities more measurable by taking into account the impact of its core operations, alongside the positive work they undertake.

We've been recognised as a Which? Eco Provider for the third year running. We're committed to being part of the climate crisis solution, standing up to protect the planet.
